November 23rd: Kate Marshall Flaherty and Donna Langevin
Kate Marshall Flaherty most recent books are “Stone Soup” with Quattro Books, “Reaching V,” with Guernica Editions and “where we are going” with Piquant Press. She has been published in Canadian journals such as CV2, Descant, Grain, Malahat Review and Vallum, International Anthologies such as “Not A Muse”, and American Journals such as “Saranac Review”. She was Shortlisted for Descant’s Best Canadian Poem, the Pablo Neruda Poetry Prize, the Robert Frost Poetry Prize and Thomas Merton Poetry of the Sacred Award. She guides Golden Rule Leadership Retreats, Stillpoint writing retreats and yoga classes. She is proud to be the mother of three spirited young adults. Kate lives in Toronto, where she has been known to “poem” people during National Random Acts of Poetry weeks. She is now the Toronto representative for the League of Canadian Poets. Poetry is her lifeline.
Donna Langevin, a retired teacher and co-author of four ESL books, is a long-time resident of Toronto, Ontario. Her latest poetry collections include In the Café du Monde, Hidden Brook Press 2008, and The Laundress of Time, Aeolus Press 2015. She won first prize in a TOPS Contest 2008 and also in the Cyclamens and Swords contest 2009. She was short-listed for the Descant 2010 Winston Collins prize in 2012 and won second prize in the GritLIT Poetry Competition in Hamilton, 2014.
About Donna’s plays: The Man with a Butterfly Hat was produced at the Toronto Alumnae Theatre for New Ideas Festival, 2012. Welcome to Nuit Blanche was produced at the Ryerson 50+ Festival, 2014. The Dinner won first prize in the one act play contest for the 2014 Eden Mills Writers’ Festival, an Honorable Mention Stella Award at Act 2, Ryerson 2015, and was published online by Morel Magazine, August 2015. Her full length play Bargains in the New World won the Eden Mills Festival play completion in 2015.
